Waste to Wealth

Repurpose Used Cooking Oil (RUCO)

Gnapika Enterprises is an authorized aggregator working under the RUCO (Repurpose Used Cooking Oil) initiative. We collect Used Cooking Oil (UCO) from hotels, restaurants, canteens, hospitals, educational institutions, and other food establishments.

Instead of allowing used cooking oil to be repeatedly used in cooking or disposed of improperly, we collect it through an organized process and channel it for biodiesel production

Why Should Used Cooking Oil Not Be Reused?

Repeatedly heating and reusing cooking oil can cause undesirable changes in the oil and may affect food quality. Used cooking oil should therefore be handled responsibly instead of being repeatedly reused.

Improper disposal of UCO can also create environmental problems, including:

  • 🚫

Avoid Repeated Reuse — Repeated heating can degrade cooking oil and affect food quality.

  • 🚰

Prevent Drain Blockages — Pouring used oil into drains can cause blockages and plumbing issues.

  • 🌿

Protect Water & Soil — Improper disposal can contribute to environmental pollution.

  • ♻️

Enable Responsible Recycling — Collected UCO can be channelled for biodiesel production.

RUCO – Repurpose Used Cooking Oil

Why Should Used Cooking Oil Be Collected?

Used Cooking Oil should be collected separately instead of being repeatedly reused or improperly discarded.

  • 🚫

Prevents Repeated Reuse – Helps avoid the use of degraded cooking oil.

  • 🌿

Protects the Environment – Reduces improper disposal of oil into drains and water systems.

  • ♻️

Enables Responsible Recycling – Collected UCO can be channelled for biodiesel production.

  • 💡

Turns Waste into a Resource – Gives used cooking oil a productive second life.

Monitoring

HOW THE FOOD SAFETY DEPARTMENT MONITORING

TPC Testing – Monitoring Used Cooking Oil

The Food Safety Department uses a TPC Meter to check the quality and degradation of repeatedly heated cooking oil. When the TPC level exceeds 25%, the oil is not suitable for further food preparation and should be removed from the food chain.

TPC is an important indicator of the degradation of oil caused by repeated heating and frying. As cooking oil is reheated, the level of Total Polar Compounds increases.

The TPC reading helps Food Safety officials and Food Business Operators determine whether the oil is still suitable for cooking or should be removed from the food preparation process.

Total Polar Compounds

TPCs are formed during frying through hydrolysis, oxidation and polymerization of heated oils. Repeated reuse causes TPC accumulation, which is harmful to consumer health.

FSSAI has set limits of 15% TPCs in edible oil and not more than 25% in used oil/fat. The RUCO initiative creates a platform for FBOs to connect with aggregators to safely dispose of used cooking oils, which are then passed on to biodiesel or soap manufacturers.

The drive ensures that oil/fat with high TPCs is not circulated back into the food chain.
